ABOUT THE CAPALABA WORKSHOP

The Capalaba workshop was the first TRACTION Workshop to commence and the rubber hit the road in July 2015.
The Bicycle Build Program is the primary focus of the Capalaba Workshop and it currently operates on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays.
In addition to the bicycle program, TRACTION is supporting participants from the Hemmant Flexi Learning Centre who are currently engaged in building a mobile coffee cart on Fridays, which serve as a new social enterprise being established by the school.

CAPALABA STATE COLLEGE (CSC)
Capalaba State College offers education from Prep to Year 12 ensuring continuity through all phases of learning. The College strives to support and encourage every individual student to reach their potential and feel a sense of belonging and pride in all that they do.
Students from Capalaba are fortunate to be supported by a superb teaching team, including Pride of Australia (Qld) Inspiration award winner Michael Quinn and Michelle Barlow. A select group of participants from years 8 & 9 at Capalaba College are engaged in the TRACTION Workshop for a full school day per week.

CLEVELAND DISTRICT STATE HIGH SCHOOL (CDSHS)

REDLAND DISTRICT SPECIAL SCHOOL (RDSS)
RDSS the only specialist school for students with disabilities in the Redlands area and is committed to ensuring high quality educational outcomes for students.
RDSS provides educational programs for students with disabilities from birth through to the completion of State Schooling, typically 17 years of age. RDSS also provides a full time Prep program for students with high support needs who are more than likely to attend the Special School for their future schooling.
All students have Personalised Learning Plans that articulate individualised goals designed in conjunction with parents appropriate to the students learning needs. Students have an intellectual disability and a high percentage of students have additional impairments such as autism, physical or sensory impairments. RDSS accesses services to provide occupational therapy, physiotherapy, speech language therapy, guidance services and specialist nursing services.

HEMMANT FLEXI LEARNING CENTRE (HFLC)
HFLC is also a ’Youth Plus’ centre within the Edmund Rice Education network and has been established to support young people disengaged from mainstream schooling. The Centre offers a program that encourages participation and active learning in a supported and connected way.
Participants from Hemmant Flexi attend TRACTION for half-a-day a week to develop workshop and practical experiences as they learn to renovate and restore bicycles with a view to establishing their own enterprise/market to sell their creations.
"Whilst participants do develop skills by working on bike projects, TRACTION really focuses on broader life skills. The volunteer Bike Mentors are positive role models that emphasize taking pride in what you do and the importance of communication and social skills. This is very useful and reinforces what we do at school, encouraging the the students present themselves confidently. TRACTION is great because it allows students to put the skills they’ve learnt into practice while motivating them to create their own positive futures.”
