BRISBANE State High School students are the first to participate in community bike building program, TRACTION, at its new West End workshop.

The West End workshop is the third TRACTION facility to open in Brisbane, with others in Capalaba and Moorooka.

The workshop provides a safe environment where high school students can learn new skills and put them to action in tangible and meaningful learning activities under the guidance and support of mentors.

Councillor for The Gabba Ward, Jonathon Sri said he was excited to see the impact TRACTION would have on the local community and young people involved.

“TRACTION is a unique opportunity for young people to find their path in life and grow as individuals in a non-traditional learning environment,” he said.

“I really hope West End residents proactively approach TRACTION and see it as an opportunity to contribute positively to the growth of the community.”

Cr Sri said TRACTION would educate young people about the value of repurposing and the issue of over consumption.

“There aren’t a lot of opportunities for young people to engage in programs that will teach them real life skills,” he said.

“TRACTION will teach the next generation to be waste conscious and repair, recycle and reuse in a supportive and encouraging environment.”

TRACTION founder Sandy Murdoch said he was thrilled to be growing the program, which started in 2015.

“It’s wonderful to see how eager people are to support this program – from schools, to local business, to our own mentors,” he said.

“What’s most gratifying is the satisfaction young people get from being involved.”

The new workshop would not be possible without the support of local business Pensar Contruction Group, which has provided a rent-free space within its facility and access to its staff.

Karl Yunker, CEO of Pensar said he was excited to see the program expand and looked forward to seeing the positive change in young people.

“I believe TRACTION fosters self-confidence and a sense of hope for young people,” he said.

“They are connected through a common interest and have the guidance of  respected mentors.

“I have witnessed firsthand the immediate and positive impact TRACTION has had on the young people involved.

“Engaging students with our staff is a powerful way to demonstrate to young people what their futures could look like.”

TRACTION provides engaging programs that support young people and their development of practical skills, communication and broader life skills.

The Bicycle Build program is an alternative way to learning that allows young people find their purpose and become active and positive contributors to their communities.
