TRACTION helps St Joseph’s School students to go places
Cycling Brisbane, the award-winning program of Brisbane City Council, has been a longstanding supporter of TRACTION’s work empowering young people, and encouraging more young people to ride, safely. One of the ways TRACTION makes a difference is donating bikes to those in need, and since 2015 over 1,170 have been given to young people across Southeast Queensland.
St Joseph’s School in Bracken Ridge has participated in Council’s Active School Travel program, which offers Brisbane primary schools a suite of free resources, tools and incentives to enable students, parents, carers and teachers to leave the car at home and actively travel to school. It’s all about creating healthier, more active students and families, increasing road safety awareness, safer streets and continuing to tackle traffic congestion.
Students at St Joseph’s include many from families recently arrived in Australia, and in March, it was a privilege for TRACTION to provide 6 bicycles for students attending the school. The students did not have bikes of their own, so they were delighted to receive them. The bikes were originally donated to TRACTION by members of local communities, and serviced by the TRACTION team, ready for the students to ride.
TRACTION also donated 12 bikes to students from Acacia Ridge State School and Stretton State College.

Cr Ryan Murphy, Brisbane City Council’s Public and Active Transport Chair, attended the presentation.
